Private Driving Lessons
Not many, if any, people would be able to learn to drive without proper input from someone who actually knows what they are talking about. Those who are not qualified driving instructors, but know what they are talking about will be few and far between. Additionally, those who are driving instructors, but are not fully qualified (there are trainee instructors who are, under specific circumstances, allowed to teach) are ulikely to be providing the best value for money.
Different people will suit different styles of learning. Some will find that it takes them a little time to 'warm up' each lesson and therefore an hour is too short. Others will find 2 hours too long to concentrate for. Some will be looking for driving courses with many hours over a short time, whereas for others, such a learning style would be unfathomable.
Prices vary greatly from driving school to driving school. Prices also vary greatly from national driving school to national driving school, and independent to independent. Whatever you pay for your lessons, make sure you do your homework thoroughly on whoever you choose. This is to ensure that they are suitably qualified and experienced at what they are doing. Even if driving lessons were half price, you would not be getting good value if they were only providing a quarter service!
The best idea is to get recommendations from your friends and family about the instructors that they have used in the past. If they have retired, ask them who they would recommend - and who they would not!
